Abstract
In 2005, the Republic of Burundi entered a post-conflict period after a decade of civil war that not only destroyed the country’s economic infrastructure but also hampered the economic growth and the development of information and telecommunication technologies (ICT). Since 2005, a series of policy reforms have been carried out for development of all sectors of economy in general and the ICT sector in particular. Some of the challenges and limitations related to the development of ICT sector in Burundi are the lack of adequate telecommunications infrastructure, the lack of energy and financial resources, and the lack of the necessary highly qualified specialists in the field and the rapid pace of development of the ICT sector. The purpose of this paper is to examine the state of the information and communication sector in the Republic of Burundi. For this purpose the state of the country’s telecommunications infrastructure and prospects for their development are considered. In the perspective of development and expansion of the capacity of the existing telecommunication systems, it is recommended to introduce wave division multiplexing technology, which allows increasing the bandwidth many times without the need to install additional fiber optic cables.
