Abstract
With the constant growth of demand for information and communication services, it becomes necessary to modernize or optimize the existing information infrastructure to increase the transport network capacity. However, there are limitations in increasing the transmission capacity due to the system impairments. In this paper, models of light propagation in an optical fiber are described. The transmission rate limits by the type of optical fiber are studied as well the system limitations due to chromatic and polarization mode dispersions.
Keywords: transmission rate, chromatic dispersion, polarization mode dispersion, optical fiber, nonlinear effects.
